Satan and Adam

Satan and Adam are one of my all time favorite duos/One-man Bands. They were Harlem street performers that gained some attention in the 90's. Sadly they are largely forgotten. Hopefully an upcoming documentary will bring these wonderful performers back into the worlds consciousness.

Satan and Adam Documentary

Satan and Adam is a feature-length documentary that follows two unlikely Harlem street performers who later emerge as award winning recording artists when "discovered" by the band, U2. The charismatic Sterling "Satan" Magee, described as Parliament Funkadelic-meets-Robert Johnson, has toured with Marvin Gaye, Etta James, King Curtis and James Brown, and is widely considered the best one-man-band in the world. The pensive Adam Gussow is a young university professor, published author, and talented harmonica player. Their tense meeting on 125th Street in Harlem during a racially charged 1980's New York defied cultural expectations, and set them on a musical odyssey that would forever change their lives and the audiences they inspired.

Scott Balcerek documents Adam's ten-year "Blues apprenticeship" with Satan, their painful separation, Satan's mysterious disappearance, and the hard cultural and personal realities of their reunion. Satan and Adam reminds us of the power of music to transcend, while providing another important chapter in the Blues experience and its cultural impact on the world.

Uh... Adam Gussow is NOT "largely forgotten." He is very well known in the blues community.

Thanks for reminding people that Satan and Adam--Sterling Magee and I--are still out here. We toured a bit in the summer of 2008 and hope to get back out there in 2009.
